I looked and looked for white or yellow leads to go in a mechanical pencil with no luck. So, I ended up buying a set of 12 kids' washable colored pencils since all the school supplies are out right now. I'm really hoping these sharpen without constantly breaking and the lines wash out well. I'm going to try it out on a small wallhanging.

Good luck. Ive run into specialty pencils breaking too much to be practical, too. There's a fine line between marking well and coming out when you get finished.

Are you needing pencils for marking quilting lines? I would not use pencils at all. They will not come out even with washing. I would use either the purple air pen or the blue wash out pen. Both come out easily when spritzed with water with a tiny bit of vinegar. The purple pen goes away by itsself.

FONS AND PORTER HAS A WHITE PENCIL FOR MARKING ON DARK FABRICS. REALLY GOOD.

I speak from experience about using crayola washable markers. I don't know about the pencils. You can read my post about suggestions to remove my markings.

I am a believer in sticking to the use an item was intended for.

I like the blue water erasable fabric marking pen.

If the mark only needs to be on for a little while, try a Marvy Marker, the purple one. Depending on your humidity, they'll last an hour or two. If you want the marks gone quicker, spray with a little water and they're gone.

Don't bother with the pink, they disappear even faster.

I've found a water erasable white pen at Hancock's that works on dark fabric. Clover I believe. It's a little strange in that the mark takes a few seconds to appear after you mark with it, but I'm used to it now.
