I love the quilt blocks painted on barns. When we go on a road trip and I spot one its like finding family. =) Since I'm not lucky enough to have a barn I wanted to paint one and stake it in my front yard like a sign for kindred spirits passing by. My question for my friends here...do quilt blocks have meanings? I want to choose one that is my favorite and "fits" my family....With what there is to choose from I want to make sure I get it right. What are your thoughts?

I like that idea too. Having a meaning would just make it so meaningful. I will be watching for answers too.

The first thought that popped in my head was a Log Cabin block. So cozy and with a red center it implies home and hearth.
Just don't do a Contrary Wife block lololol :D:D
I think your idea is so sweet! :)

Check out all of the free patterns at http://www.quilterscache.com and find the name of a block that pertains to something in your life. Maybe the state where you live, your occupation, etc.

The PA. dutch had meaning but don't remember what they were

Some of the Penn Dutch signs painted on their barns were really a good luck thing - like a hex to bad luck.

Some quilt blocks do have meanings and history behind their names and the patterns. A friend of mine told me today that she's going to paint 2 barn quilts - - Contrary Wife and Contrary Husband to flank each side of her garage door. I'm not quite sure of the message that she's trying to send! :?
