Im new to quilting although no stranger to sewing and am using a domestic sewing machine (brother) . I have a embroidery foot and a darning/freemotion foot . Which is best ? I have read that a walking foot can also be used . I have previously only used a 1/4 foot but would like to try bubbles and patterns . Thanks . x

use a darning foot (also called a free-motion foot) for designs, free-motion quilting-
use a walking foot for stitch in the ditch, cross=hatch, straight line quilting. feed dogs down (not-used) when doing free motion (with darning foot) feed dogs up (engaged) with walking foot |

Very helpful thankyou . Is there a way to get feed dogs down without using a darning plate ? x

Some machines have a lever to lower them. check your manual to see if yours has that option.

You can free motion quilt with the feed dogs up using the free motion/darning foot, however you have to cover them. If you do not have a darning plate cut a small hole out of an index card and tape it over your feed dogs, leave the hole where the needle will move freely!
Good luck! |
