Wow....when you make one mistake, it seems they multiply! I used spray basting on a lap quilt and it appears that I used too much. But once it was on, there was no going back....so I quilted the basic lines and it was down to just the middle of all the 7" blocks. It was gumming up the needle and had sticky stuff all over the machine from the edges. I had basted the outer edges so thought I was safe to try and wash out the spray. Evidently that was mistake #2. The spray didn't wash out from batting, but let go from fabric and then stuck to itself causing lumps and a general mess. I have been working on getting out the lumps, but in the middle, I am going to have to take apart some of the seams to smooth it out. Geez, what else can go wrong? And what do you use to get the spray to dissolve in the wash?

I'm so sorry you've had a bad experience. I use June Tailor from Wal-mart. The worst experience I have had is getting a good layer of batting fluff on my arms from pulling apart and re-sticking. I've never had a gummed up needle and it has always washed out.

Are you certain you used a washable type? There are other types out there and they are often on the shelves near the type for quilting.

I used June Tailor, but most likely not the fault of the spray. I'm quite sure that I used too much. Just need to figure out how to wash it out of quilt as it is still gumming up at the needle causing breakage. I love how easy and fast it was to sandwich the quilt. I will have to try a different spray I guess.

Whar kind did you use??? I use June Tayor or 505 spray and never had any problems. You also just need to use a very small amount.

I had that problem the first time I tried it as well. My machine did not want to sew through the goo, but I think I just sprayed it too heavily. I used a light hand spraying the last time and all went well. That first time though I ended up using new batting and washing my backing piece to get as much out as I could.

what spray did you use? and you could remove your needle often and clean it. irritating but evidently necessary. good luck.

I did not have good luck with the June Taylor but have had great results with Sullivans.

I have to agree that you got too heavy with the spray. I have used this brand and not had any problems...
I am sorry you have had to learn these hard lessons :(

Don't let reading about one bad experience keep you away from spray basting! It really is a blessing. I'm glad the OP gave a heads-up what NOT to do! ;)
