Storing finished quilts

What's the best way to store finished quilts that you don't have room to hang or display? I know keeping out direct sunlight is best, but can you safely keep them folded on the shelf? Is it okay to store them in the plastic zip bags that you get pillows/sheets, etc in? Want to be sure and keep them safe until I give them away as gifts or sell them.

I think the best way is to lay them out on a bed. They can be stacked and covered with a sheet to protect them from light.

Plastic does not allow the fabrics to breathe and moisture can condense inside, so it is usually not recommended.

I spread them all out on my spare bed. Then cover with a sheet as Prism 99 said. If they are very large and I need to fold them I move and refold every three months.

I'm another who spreads them out on a spare bed. When we have a guest there are a lot of quilts to be moved!

I keep mine folded up in a pillowcase on a shelf. I take them out and refold at the change of the seasons. Maybe if I had an extra bed I might be inclined to keep a few...HMM!

I make matching pillowcases for each quilt and store my finished quilt in its own case. The all cotton pillowcase lets my quilt "breathe", keeps out the dust and light and I can tell at a glance what quilt is in there because it matches the pillowcase. This also makes for fewer left over bits and pieces after finishing a quilt.

I keep all of my quilts that aren't in use on the beds in my 2 small guest rooms.
I don't display quilts, mostly cause they're too big; I don't make wallhangings, large lap quilts are the smallest I go.

Great ideas! Thanks. I haven't had the problem of storing quilts. My kids confiscate them as soon as I finish making them.

Have a couple quilt stands that I rotate the quilts periodically.
