Singer 404 Help
 

I just purchased a singer 404 and it seems to be working great, then every 6 inches or so the lower thread starts to knot up and jam. I have checked and made sure the bobbin is in correctly and it is thread correctly also any ideas?

Hi Ginger,

I have to ask, are you sure it's the lower thread? Most commonly nests and such at the bottom are blamed on the bottom thread but they're actually top tension way too loose. What's your upper tension set at? (i.e what number) I'm also assuming that the presser foot is down. I'm notorious lately for leaving it up for some reason.

Check your thread spool; your thread may be catching on a burr. If that is not the culprit, follow the thread path top and bottom and look for dirt or rough areas. If it is happening every 6th stitch it is something in the threading or in the way the thread is feeding. Turn the machine by hand so you will be able to feel when it makes the knot, you will be able to determine where it is coming from.

Change to different thread and different bobbin thread and a different needle.

Ok I changed my thread and had no problems, I went and bought some new bobbins at Joanns for this machine thinking maybe I had the wrong bobbin in it and the Class 66 ones from there don't even fit in the machine. I'm not sure what the problem is I have the tension dial set between 3-4 and am using schmetz needles

Most of the class 66 bobbins you find are garbage. You need them from a reputable source, like Sew-Classic:

Your tension setting is reasonable enough it shouldn't be a problem, and the needles are good.

Some times it is good to have someone look at it.

A lot of times it is the TOP thread that causes the problem.

My new 404 seems to do better with plastic bobbins? They were much quieter. I found a treasure trove of 66 bobbins at a thrift store, but haven't tried them in her yet. Keep your eyes open for some at yours.
