Using Yo-Yos...Oh, The Possibilies!
when I was a teen, my grandmother and I liked to go, "Antickity Shoppin'," down in Pasadena and one day, I found a lovely Yo-Yo quilt top. It was pieced with open spaces in between. I've lost that top...darn. so I thought I'd make another in Gramma's honor. I went snooping around the internet and my, there sure are a lot of variations of Yo-Yo quilts! One of my faves is where the maker appliqued the Yo-Yos of various sizes on a white background. Here it is on Kate Frock's blog, http://katesfrocks.blogspot.com/2010...-yo-quilt.html
What are some that you've seen? ~Cindy |

I took these pictures at the Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show in 2012. It was inside the little grocery store. What a novel way to display a quilt!

Oh...yes, very different. I've seen yo-yos used just in the corners of squares of a quilt block. It looks like a medallion.

When I was a little girl (I'm 61 now) my Mom made me a doll I named Alfred out of yoyos. I still remember that doll after all these years and wonder what ever happened to him!

Thanks for sharing that website. I love her quilt.

I only have one in my Avatar, not in my life.

I've seen yo-yos used to make vests, as applique in a crazy quilt and a denim jacket. I, too, had a "doll" made of yo-yos when I was a child.

I love the yo-yos sewn onto the flat cloth.

I have a beautiful yo-yo quilt like this - with the holes between each yo-yo - that I bought at a tag sale - I haven't measured it but its at least a queen/king size - I don't know what to do with it because its so heavy and I don't want to use it on my bed because it would be a pain to put it on/take it off every day - any suggestions - right now I just have it folded for display. I would really like to do something with it so it can be seen and appreciated. Thanks

My mother made several queen sized and twin sized yo-yo quilts. She did not back them or appliqué them so they all have holes in between. I have a queen sized one she made for us and also have 2 matching yo-yo twin sized. She even made 3 skirts for herself; one a multi-colored, one a forrest green one and another red and green one for Christmas. She was approached by a lady in a restaurant who requested that Mom make one for her. She wore a colored slip under the skirts. After her death I kept her skirts and have them hanging in my closet. Great memories of seeing her sit outside or on the couch sewing yo-yos. I placed one in her hand with a needle and thread at her funeral. Just seemed natural to see one there.
