batting thickness/puffiness

I want a batting that is not too thick or puffy. The mattress on my bed is kind of high (too high for me). The beauty of the headboard is almost hidden when I put the pillows on the bed. I can only describe it as George Washington or Thomas Jefferson style. I want a flat batting. I don't care if it is polyester or cotton. What kind should I buy? Thanks.

The last time I was at JoAnn's, they had a sign on each bin of batting stating thickness. Might be a good place to start!

Hobbs Thermore batting is a very thin polyester -- I think 1/4". Can be quilted up to 8" apart.

Quilter's Dream has a very thin needlepunched cotton batting -- "Request" weight is their thinnest.

Warm&natural is a good choice- it is a flat, dense batting

I've purchased both thin polyester and cotton battings. All the cotton battings I've seen are thin.

Personally I like the high loft polyester battings. If you want thin polyester, you can buy low loft polyester batting.

I have always used the traditional needle-punched poly batting. It's a low loft and works well in this area because we don't need the warmth. It's durable with frequent laundering.

Warm & Natural is a very thin cotton batting. But very heavy. I use it all the time with no issues. Can be quilted up to 10" apart. Quilter's Dream cotton batting is also very thin, not as heavy as W&N. Has a very nice drape. When I finish up this roll of W&N that is probably what I will switch to.

i used to use warm and natural. A couple years ago i switched to Dream Cotton's Request. I like the thinness and the light weight!!

So many batting has been mention but I would just suggest you don't want to buy an inexpensive batting at the fabric chain store because with the cost and time that you invested in making this quilt, you might regret using cheaper batting in a few years. I have always loved Hobbs 80/20. It does have a slight puffiness but most poly will also give you that puffiness. Quilter's Dream is a bit more expensive but is one of the highest quality of batting available. You might call their offices and inquire what they would recommend. Maybe they could send you some samples. I remember them being located on the east coast. Good luck.

Dream Cotton or 80/20 is what I use a lot of.

Another option would be using flannelette as the batting.

Just remember ... the thinner your battings the less loft you will see.
