Looking for Mariner's Compass Paper Pieced Pattern
 

Good morning ya'll - - I am an experienced sewer and want to make a Mariner's Compass quilt, but I am having a hard time finding a paper pieced pattern here in my local area. I have found patterns and books on line, but don't really know which one would be best. Do any of you have a recommendation for a pattern/book?

There are so many different patterns both traditional and modern that it is hard to pick something out. On this Google search, there were numerous books listed one especially by Carol Doak called Mariner's Compass Stars: 24 Stellar Paper-Pieced Blocks & 9 Easy Quilt Projects.

I made this quilt using Judy Mathieson's book Mariners Compass quilts setting a new course. I highly recommend it. The book contains several patterns for 14" MC blocks but best of all gives very good directions on how to draft your own to any size. The book contains a pull out pattern for some larger sizes. I think they finish at around 36"? Can't remember. In the pictured quilt I used the pattern for the center compass and drafted my own for the outer compass and partial compass. the book also teaches you how to use the freezer paper method of paper piecing, which I loved and have used a lot since. You don't stitch through the paper but next it (folded over) so you can reuse pattern pieces multiple times and there is no tedious removal.

I've been practicing a little with the paperpiecing you mentioned about not stitching throughit. Is so easy. Love your quilts.
