Single Block Quilts - Help!
 

I've searched the archives and come up with one post on this subject.

I would like to make a small quilt, basically WOF in a single block. The star quilt referenced above is the only one I've come up with. No, I don't want to do the math to make something else. :D :D

So mad at myself as I just saw two examples on a blog a short while ago but cannot find them!! :(

It is not hard but what size do you want to make this quilt?? Without any borders, if you wanted to make a 12" quilt, you would have to make your HST 4" finished so I would cut 5" squares. Hope that this makes sense.

Search for "One Block Quilt or Quilts" . I think there is a book by that title.

Duh... Now I get it. Look for the book "Sew One and You're Done" , making a quilt from a single block, by Evelyn Sloppy. It may be in your public library or used at Amazon.

You could adapt any 12" block to be 48" by multiplying the finished piece sizes by 4, then adding a half inch for seams. Or by 3 if you want a 36" square. I sometimes do that for a baby blanket, just make one big square.

The single star quilt was my post. Do you want to have the star bordered, or just the star? I'm guessing WOF would be 40" or so?
If you want just the star, there are 4 patches across, so if each one finished at 10", you would have a 40" star.
Cut the plain squares at 10.5". Cut the fabric for the HST at 11, sew the triangles, then trim to 10.5"
If you want a 2" border, then the star would be 36" for a 40 inch finish. In this case, the squares finish at 9".
Cut the plain squares at 9.5". Cut the fabric for the HST at 10" sew the triangles, then trim to 9.5", then cut the border strips at 2.5"
As mentioned, if you want a single block for a quilt, and you want it to be WOF then 36 or 40 inches are good sizes to work with. Just count the number of patches in the block and divide that into 36 or 40. 36 is more versatile as it can be evenly divided by 2,3,4,6,or 9. For a block with 5 patches across 40 is a good choice.

I have a book of just big blocks. 'Big Block Quilts'. Basically it's just blown up blocks like willferg posted.

I think I posted one I made a long while ago. Made with 12" squares. HST to form a star. Very simple. I will try to find pics.

Thanks for all the suggestions. Yes, I really just want to make a small quilt approximately 40" square, but just a single block. I may or may not add borders. After I posted this question I also thought to look on quilters cache and found a couple of possibilities there.
