Lots of scraps
 

I sorted my scraps tonight. I don't know where they come from but boy do they multiply fast. Anyway I keeper anything that was bigger than 2 1/2" square and 2 1/2" strips. I've already done 2 scrappy quilts so what should I do with the rest? I thought of cutting them into strips and just sew them together. Any suggestions? I'd like to get the pile down before starting something new.

I'm in a scrap quilt phase -- Making a quilt now out of 6, 5 and 3 1/2" squares -- It is from the book Cut the Scraps. There are so many fun quilts in that book. When I cut the the Thread quilt (from that book), I also cut strips for a string quilt, and squares for a mock cathedral window denim quilt so I have projects for the next several weeks! There are tons of fun scrap quilt patterns... check out Pinterest for some inspiration. Bonnie Hunter has some great patterns for scrap quilts, too.

There are so many patterns out there on Google, even free ones. The pattern Square within a Square is real easy pattern.

You are brave to want to use up scraps. My solution after I have made scrappy quilts from my scraps is to take the last of them and put them on the free table at Guild. They just seem to have a way of multiplying on themselves like dust bunnies under the bed.

Don't forget 11/2" strips. I use them lots. I love Bonnie Hunter and use her methods of taming strips. She sews all sorts of sizes and shapes on paper and cuts them up to make blocks. She calls these string blocks. I take shorter strips and sew like size together, then sew to the paper (I use doodle pads because they are pulpy and crack off easily) as it is makes for interesting looks.

I'm making my 5th jelly roll race quilt. I don't use jelly rolls but use my strips from past projects. I make some with 3 inch wide and some with 2 1/2 inch strips. If I don't have wof strips, I sew together shorter strips to come up with wof strips. They come out pretty cool. Sometimes sew them together at an angle, sometimes with a square joining the strips but mostly just joining the strips end to end. I've also been piecing the backs for them. I am seeing my piles go down. I give these guilts to nieces and nephews. It's also great for using up odd spools of thread. So many options.
