Wrinkle-Free Fabrics?
I make napkins out of left-over quilting cotton fabrics sometimes if I really love the fabric. I have a lot of them and it's nice to have pretty cloth napkins to use every day instead of paper napkins. My mother-in-law would like me to make some for her, but she would prefer a non-wrinkle fabric so she doesn't have to iron them. (Fact: after washing i put my napkins in the dryer until they're about half-dry, then flatten them out and let them air-dry -- i don't mind the slightly rumpled look one bit for everyday use!).
Does anyone one know what kinds of fabric I could use for frequently-washed napkins that wouldn't require ironing? And if it's a "specialty" fabric, where I could find such fabrics online? thank you! |
Roc-Ion ticking is permanent press coated. They sell some at fabric.com --probably other online stores, too.

Any cotton fabric with a bit of polyester will wrinkle less.

Thanks very much. Ive never bought or used RocLin or poly/cotton blends. Guess I need to do some searching!

I use cloth napkins all the time. I do iron some of them (ironically, it's the polyester ones I iron. The corners tend to curl up). I take them out of the dryer right away and fold them flat and they are fine. I would think that any fabric with a bit of polyester in it wouldn't wrinkle. Or just tell her to take them out of the dryer right away. lol

It seems like the more worn/used a fabric like linen or cotton is - the less wrinkled it seems to be.

I do the same, Cash'sMom, and it works just fine for me. But my MIL can't abide the slightly rumpled look :-)

Weaver's cloth is a poly/cotton blend. It has a bit more heft than quilting cottons and looks like linen. It usually is wrinkle resistant.

I use cloth napkins ONLY on holiday, family dinners......they are store bought, but no ironing needed, so I'm guessing 50/50 poly cotton blend. The way to check fabric on the bolt....grab a handful, squeeze and hold for the count of 10, release----no wrinkles, that's the poly!
now, my question to those who use cloth napkins daily......for three meals per day? .....or just dinner?..... sorry, but for daily use, I use the paper product......for all meals....less work for me....jmho |
My husband's work shirts are made by Dickies. Never a wrinkle on them, I wonder if that fabric is sold by the yard.
We use paper napkins around here. My husband and sons don't care, they are more interested in what is on their plates. And as long as they don't wipe their faces on their sleeves or hands on their pants I am cool. |
