Permanent markers
 

I want to buy some permanent colored markers to do touch ups on my quilts and embroidery. I would also like to use them for things like drawing in a face on fabric dolls, etc. There are so many out there that i am confused as to which ones to buy. Any help would be appreciated.

I would recommend you buy ones specifically made for fabrics that are acid-free or ph neutral. I don't use them so can't recommend a brand, sorry.

Pigma pens work well on fabric. They come in different sizes and colors.

I like the Fabrico markers by Tushineko. They have dual tips (fine and large), are ink not paint, and last a long time. I used an Amazon gift card to get mine and store them horizontally.
But have also found some in quilt shops. They are perfect for filling in "mis-stitches" in embroidery and adding shading or changing fabric colors.

Sharpie makes many colors and different sized tips. I saw a video where this lady used them to drawl on fabric, then sprayed the fabric with alcohol and water mixture which made it bleed, she had made a whole cloth using this method. She said since its permanent you don't even have to heat set them.

I use Micron markers for all of this. I did an advent calendar, quilted it with white thread and then in the colored places I used the micron markers to color the thread to match. I ironed the top afterwards and 13 years later it is great. I have colored parts of fabrics to enhance the colors and that also worked s I do use the micron a lot. I do have some Fabrico as well, but I generally use the micron because the points are finer. They come in a lot of colors.

Permanent markers are only permanent when you wish they would wash out. I had some bleach spots on a black top which I tried to cover with a black marker. I had to redo those spots every few washings.

Pigma pens would be permanent, can be used on fabric, and will stay much longer. They come in lots of different colors and are easy to use when you lay your fabric on a piece of fine sandpaper.

Micron pens wear very well on the fabric--and they don't dry up when not in use. Quality product.

Fabric paint pens. If you have acrylic paints, you can buy a small bottle of fabric medium (looks like a whitish thick goop). This will make acrylic paint into fabric paint. It does not dilute the paint or soften the color, just makes it pliable and ok for fabric. Mix it one to one. For projects that you are suggesting, I would just mix a couple drops of each on a margarine lid and start painting.
