Are you thinking of the Gypsy Wife Quilt?

Maybe, they just called it a gypsy quilt, no wife. It looks very complicated for a beginning quilter.

If it is the Jen Kingwell pattern, I found a blog that did a quilt-a-long (http://hydeeannsews.blogspot.com/p/gypsy-wife-2016.html). It looks helpful.

I keep debating on getting this one. It does look fun.

It looks like a great way to incorporate some one of a kind blocks and odds & ends strips of fabric

If you heard of this quilt as a good pattern for beginners, then it probably wasn't the Gypsy Wife. In a search for gypsy quilt, a couple of others show up that are simple in construction, but it's not clear whether "gypsy quilt" is the proper name for them. One example - https://www.pinterest.com/pin/127226758198348382/ - another example - http://theredheadedmermaid.blogspot....uilt-done.html - and another - http://allthisforthem.blogspot.com/2...psy-quilt.html

Sometimes we don't know how a quilt got its name - perhaps the fabric line, perhaps the pattern used, perhaps just the whim of the quilt's maker.

I would not consider Gypsy Wife a good pattern for a beginner. Not because it's difficult as far as sewing, but I found the instructions difficult to follow, and figured it was good that I could tell what I needed to do based on the picture. I really struggled with the layout after I had the blocks complete because of the lack of measurements - most often you have to do the math yourself to figure out what size block goes where.

I think it would be really neat to do this and use my own favorite blocks instead of the ones in the pattern. As long as you have the correct size blocks to combine with the strips.

After looking at some of the pictures, maybe "gypsy quilt" is the idea of different sized blocks and strips with a big dose of "scrappy" all sewn together. It could be a real good way to use up a lot of orphan stuff.

From the comments, I'm wondering if "gypsy quilt" gets its name because it gets set aside in so many places because it's funky to make! ;)
