Davis VF

I have just purchased a Davis VF treadle sewing machine. My first question is: where do I find a serial number. All I can find is the VF, joined together, on the base. I have been doing some research but haven't found much info. The machine seems smooth as silk. The cabinet is quite poor but has lovely handles on the drawers. I would love to know its age but with no serial number don't know where to start! Would appreciate any info on this machine that anyone can give me. Thanks!!

Congrats on the new Davis. The serial number is on the front bobbin cover plate. Interested in seeing some photos.

Thanks. I found the following number on the back plate: k110409. The front plate references New Home, Orange, Mass and I'm thinking that this is a subStitute plate. The number there is 3974558. I must be. Nimby as I cannot find any data base containing either of those numbers to try and date the machine. Help!!

I have determined that the front plate on this machine is, indeed, from a New Home and the serial number thereon puts the date of manufacture at 1920. Still no info on the other front plate which is in the back with the aforementioned serial number.

Yes, the plates have been replaced. You have a Davis VF2. These were made from 1894 and 1912. I'd guess yours is around 1910. The 2 serial numbers you've given are not for this model. The "K" serial number might be for a Davis model K underfeedl.

The plate in the back has a serial number that I also think is not for this machine as it starts with a K. Today I found yet another number, this time under the front plate. It looks like this
4
457
