Denim quilt question
 

Hello everyone, Several years ago, I made a QAYG (quilt as you go) denim quilt by cutting up old jeans into circles and sewing together. (See attached picture) I would like to use the same technique, sort of, but use flannel instead. I was wondering if anyone has a way to use "Squares' and still leave the center open to show off the middle fabric. That way I won't waste so much fabric cutting out circles. Thanks for any help or suggestions.

The above quilt looks like a cathedral window pattern. I have only used flannel in squares or rectangles sewn in usual way.

well those are reversible circles. i'm about to make one again myself. i know what you mean about the fabric though. i have lovely 10 inch cuts and the circle "flaps" will cover the fabric some. I'm still debating on that.
You could make squares and zig zag them together i guess or just do a "rag" quilt .seams showing on one side.

Not that squares won't be lovely but have you considered a drunkards path? Alternate denim with circle or squared section. You could really play with the layout to maximize and showcase your whatever fabric you want to showcase. Just a suggestion....

Are the denim "flaps" sewn down with a satin stitch on your quilt? It's very colorful. I like it!

Here's one... https://www.etsy.com/listing/1500402...s_manager_grid It gives instructions for squares (Windows) and rectangles (Brick Work). I've made a few and they turn out great with minky for the center squares, and flannel for the outside, with or without batting. I've done them with denim and flannel, and flannel and regular cottons, too. The edge of the flannel is raw, and sewn down with a zig-zag, but not a satin stitch. They work up pretty quick.

Thanks everyone for all the input. I figured out the pattern that I needed by using a piece of paper. When the block is completed, it looks like a star showing from the center fabric. My template is a six-sided shape. Will share pics when I get started on it. I like this idea because when the blocks are all done and sewn in rows..the quilt is finished!

Yes, Teddybear Lady, that is how it is done. Makes a great way to use up lots of spools of assorted thread colors.
