Flannel Design Wall
 

I am making a simple design wall using cardboard, flannel, duct tape and Contact adhesive strips. I see where a number of people used batting; others used flannel. Will the one layer of flannel be sufficient?

One layer is fine. You just need a flannel that your
blocks will adhere to.

Might I suggest fleece?

I tried flannel, but discovered that blocks stick better to fleece.

I use a sheet of "foam core board" my husband bought, covered with white flannel that I just pin around the corners (like canvas on stretchers). My husband also made a simple tripod with two crossbars, so I can put the board at either level and lean it up against something. It's nice and portable and the flannel works fine for pieces smaller than a whole lap quilt (which I simply pin).

I happen to have three windows in my sewing room, which is at the north side of my house. I had my husband cut me a piece of solid insulation board the size of the inner part of the window, which is about 58" by 58". I then put up a curtain rod, sewed a pocket onto 2 pieces of white flannel, which I had sewn together vertically and hung the flannel so that it is quite flat from the rod. It works great for me and with the solid insulation, I am able to pin right into it when necessary.

I also used pink foam board, spray basted flannel, stapled the edges to the back side, command strip Velcro to the wall. Perfect for me!

I went to the Dollar Store and purchased a flannel backed tablecloth for $1.50 - stapled it on my sewing room wall and it works like a charm!!!

I have a flannel covered design wall that is a single layer and close to 25 years old. The only thing that is not so "hot" is that the white flannel is no longer snowy white because of use, environmental dust and over spray from spray baste (my fault, and lesson learned.) I use a cloths brush on it from time to time to clean off the little threads and away I go again. Love it and use it ALL the time. A wonderfully useful tool.
