Have you ever made a quilt out of silk scarfs
 

I have a large number of silk scarfs. Is it ok to make a quilt with them?

I've used silk ties, the biggest problem is there is no stability. when you cut a 2" square of quilting cotton you have a 2" square to sew with. A 2" square of silk ends up with having no shape at all :)

It is a popular fabric for crazy quilting projects, but over time those silks have shattered quite a bit. might be the fabric, might have been the dyes.

silk is also murder on rotary cutters and the fine threads embed in cutting mats so use an old mat is a suggestion.

I wonder if you'd want to stabilize it like you would with a t-shirt quilt.

That would probably be helpful. As KalamaQuilts says, silk scarf-type of silk has no stability at all. It will slide around on you like crazy.

Silk scarves would probably make a very pretty quilt, but I'm not sure about the durability. It would be good for a "show" quilt that laid over the end of the bed or the back of a sofa, but I don't think it would work well for something that was going to be used a lot.

Oooh - you just gave me an idea. I still have all of my scarves from my "bald" days, if I sewed those to white fabric (to stabilize them), then I could make a quilt from them. I'm a survivor and even though I'll probably (hopefully) never have to wear those scarves again - I had some really beautiful ones. Most people would wear them around their neck but I'm a jeans and hoodie type of gal and scarves just don't quite fit into that style. lol

I'm sure they are okay to use - as others have said. Just not for me, I think they would be very slippery.

Won't hold up with washing. I used a silk fabric for a bright sun applique. Never again. I've repaired that sun soooo many times.

Helen Goddard (for Handi Quilter) has a lovely video at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I_LOCIZzmyY&t=190s that shows her doing some exquisite quilting on a silk-ish scarf for a wall hanging, table topper, etc. You might pick up some tips there to incorporate into a quilt. It was stunningly beautiful when she finished.
