Too Good To Be True...Leather Rolling Foot???
 

I have seen advertised for several different machines a leather rolling/roller foot. You are supposed to be able to use it to do outline quilting or even stipple quilting. The circular ball attached to the foot allows you to guide the fabric similar to free motion quilting, but without dropping the feed dogs.

Call me a skeptic, but this does sound way too good to actually work well. Has anyone tried to do this? What were your results?

Looks like it is just for outline. It is not free motion quilting.
You can't move the fabric like for FMQ.

There is also one for the brother/by machines. I haven’t had a chance to use one yet. I will will try to remember to check it out today at the LQS.

Have the leather foot for Bernina machines. I find it a bit awkward to use for echoing, but you can do a large meander with it. It does not work well in small spaces.

I have the Janome roller foot. It works great for leather and vinyl. It is not a free motion attachment, although the advertising for it says you can move your fabric in any direction. That is because there is not a pressure foot involved, the roller puts enough pressure on the fabric to move. You can adjust the roller to your needle position for close topstitching on leather bags.

I am to old school in so many thing and still go by the adage: If it looks to good to be true then it is to good to be true. I am not to quick to buy new gizmos that I have not heard are tested or demoed in front of me were I can get my hands on and feel.

I have one for my Bernina. I first used it when I took a class. We used it to quilt our pieces of fabric that were then cut to use in a zipper pouch.

Ask your dealer to let you demo/try it in his/her shop.
Be sure to take some of your own things, to give it a fair try for your needs.
It's always the best way to find out if it really is for you.

I have one of these feet so I will be trying it soon.

i used on [i won't admit how many] years ago when fake leather was all the rage.
it's great for that, for real leather, etc.

i'm not convinced it would be a great choice for regular fabrics.
i will be interested to see the results of your experiments.
i might have to blow the dust off of mine. :)
