Question about Crumb Quilting Patches
 

I have noticed these "Crumb" patches on Pinterest. I am wondering if they are stitched to a foundation? If not, is there a problem keeping them flat? --- I just started trimming my scraps to different sizes (strips, squares, rectangles, etc) but have also kept most of the trimmings, "just in case". Some of the trimmings could be used as crumbs. I'm interested in hearing some comments. Thanks.

I have a crumb quilter from here on the boards that accepts my boxes of trimmings and such, I no longer save anything smaller than 6.5" x larger than a square. A lot of what I send her is still in the scrap or at least WoF stage and larger than crumbs, but as I say she can always cut down and I can't cut up. Because of her I've been able to see some really wonderful projects and techniques.

I think the videos really help explain it all. Some people use foundations, but I think most don't.

It isn't quite the same thing, but from a post I found here and then the discovery of a bunch (and I mean a bunch!) of little precut fan bags in a box of estate sale fabric I saw, I'm going to (someday) use this technique and then use the strips as sashing.

I made a crumb quilt with my "orphan" blocks and all kind of scraps: I sewed them without any backing together. The size was 20x20 cm or about 8x8 inch! And then I made a quilt and I must I love it: so much fabrics with so much things to remember! I wanted to ad a foto but I can't....

Thank you Iceblossom for the links to making a crumb quilt. I had never seen this done before and I certainly have fun watching Jenny Doan and Misty. It looks like a lot of fun sewing the scraps together and Jenny Doan is so real and funny. Nothing seems to bother her and she is a good teacher.

Hi, I do a lot of crumb squares. I have a jar on my table for all the scraps over 1/2 inch. When I just want mindless sewing or the jar is full I get a used dryer sheet and start the process. You need to be sure the dryer sheet can stand the hot iron, some of them do melt. I use these for center squares in star quilts or the one I'm doing now has a 5 1/2 crumb square and 2 borders 1 1/2 and 3 inches alternating wide and narrow strips. I really like the way they look.

I don’t put them on a foundation. i just sew them together willy nilly and then piece them into my quilts. When I quilt them they flatten out nicely.

I sew my crumbs to a paper foundation, but I'm weird. I like tearing off teeny bits of paper.

I've seen some crumb quilting videos and they aren't using what I'd call crumbs. My crumbs are smaller than a 2 1/2 inch square. Something 5 inches by WOF is a scrap, not a crumb! !

I thought crumbs were 1" finished. Some of the above descriptions sound like a crazy quilt without embellishments.

I haven't made either so just saying what I thought.

Jingle, the 1 inch squares are postage stamp quilts. I would agree that crumbs (at least the way I make them) are more like crazy quilts.

I love the idea of using scraps to create new fabric! Thank you for the link to missouri star. Also, I had not thought of taking orphan blocks and cutting them up in strips, squares, etc. to create a new block design.
