thank you for your quick reply. A very good tutorial. i will try it next time. i have only tried once and sewed from the back and then you see the stitching near the edge of the binding on the front.

Sharon Schamber has a tutorial using glue to fasten the binding before stitching. I've done this with very good results. I know that machine binding is somewhat in disfavour but the senior centres who take donation quilts want machine binding as it stands up to the industrial machines better than hand stitching.

Try a flange binding. It looks cool and its all machine, back and front. Search "quilting flange binding" - lots of good videos.
