Ideas to Enlarge Quilt Top

I have a quilt top that was started by a family member years ago and I finished it just this month.

It ended up being approximately 81.5x82 inches. EQ8 says a queen sized blanket is 92x100 inches. But how can I add borders to make it that size without it looking awkward? Another idea I had was to just make it a 100x100 inch square for the bed, but that's still 18 inches of border to add (left/right and top/bottom)

I'm not sure if I could find a similar fabric at the store because I haven't had a chance to look yet.

Any suggestions are welcome!

We do need a photo to help with ideas.

Sorry forgot the image. I don't have a big enough area to spread it out in. I also don't have any more of that fabric to add to it.

Would a fancy border like diamonds and one or two plain borders work?

Lay it out on your bed. That might give you a better idea of what you have. I would think that you would be able to find material in shades that would blend with the colors you have in the quilt as of now. Fold it up and take it with you when you go shopping for material..Don't try to do it from memory. The people at your local quilt store may have ideas for you too. Are you going to have this professionally quilted? If so that person may be of help too. Ask other quilting friends, members of your quilting guild or any other quilter you may know. Between all those people and the members of the board you are sure to come up with the perfect solution. Happy quilting!

You could add multiple borders to reach that size, but I'm not sure how it would look. Its hard to find fabrics that blend with old fabrics, but some of the civil war prints might work with that.

you won't find matching fabric in the shops, that is 1980's maybe 1970's calico. Pretty much what we had to quilt with then, but hey, it came in all colors :)

Instead of all border, how about adding a couple sashings using similar fabrics? The last couple quilts I've made I added 3 sashings with the middle one wider than the 2 outer ones, then the border, used up a lot of the scraps doing this for me also though I think you mentioned you didn't have any of the extra fabrics.

I think I would change the dimensions to more like 70 x 90 - and make a couch quilt instead of a bed quilt - and just bind it off.

That would be what I'd do.
