2025 UFO Challenge
Happy New Year!!! Happy New UFO CHALLENGE of 2025. I hope all had a great, fabulous holiday season. Mine was good. I enjoyed having time with my family members. Now it’s back to normalcy. Welcome new and returning members.
Oh and It’s that time again, where we start the new UFO Thread and start posting pics of our finished UFO’s. Our goals in this thread is to give encouragement to each other and work on our UFO’s at our leisure. If you want suggestions on how to finish an UFO, just ask away. We have many members able to give suggestions. This year I would like members to select 1-3 UFO’s they plan to complete each month and let us know what needs to be completed for the UFO. It okay and great if you post pics of your beginning projects if you can. We have a few guidelines. A UFO is what you consider a ufo. I consider for myself, a project I have not touched or worked on as a UFO project for over a year. But remember that is my definition. You may have another definition. That’s fine too, because it’s your definition that counts as your UFO’s. A UFO is considered a completed project, ready to use, quilted, bind, if needed, and ready to use or gift. If you decide to redistribute or sell the fabric to your stash, etc, and no longer have that UFO, I consider that a completed UFO. If you gift the unfinished project to a person or guild, ect, it’s considered a finish. It is off your UFO list right. This year I don’t consider a ufo project, needlework, crochet, etc. The UFO needs to have 3 layers (top, batting, backing) and quilted. So if you have a quilted pillow case, pillow project, purse, clothing jackets, vest and meets the above criteria, it counts as a UFO this year. My January list: (1). sew binding on my r/w/blk. (2) quilt pillow portion on Chiefs quillow. Then sew the pillow portion on the quilt. (3). Sew blocks and finish my 2.5” traffic jam twin quilt. (4) sew borders on my Floral twin quilt and quilt and bind. (5) quilt a top I currently have completed in my completed flimsy container. Three of my projects shouldn’t take more than a few days to complete. I just need to start working on them. So members, let’s work on our projects. Just for fun. I have added a fun quilt challenge: you will make a list of 12 UFO projects you want to complete this year. We do not need to see your list. Each month I will pull a number 1-12. Look for the number pulled the last few days of the month. For January I pulled number 3. So number 3 on my list is Traffic Jam. So I need to complete #3, and post pic by the end of the month. Now comes the challenge. What you don’t complete will have a commutative affect. Example. I don’t get January’s UFO done. So in February I will need to do my January number and February number to meet the challenge. The person(s) who complete their entire list at the end of the year, will get a small gift from me. Plus have the satisfaction of having 12 UFO’s completed. Sounds like fun? Just make your list and work on your UFO’s. Don’t forget we love pics. Lots and lots of pics. So happy sewing/quilting everyone!!!!!😊 |
Thanks for starting a new thread.
I have 7 UFOs. There may be more but that’s my goal for this year. The oldest is 7 or 8 years old to the newer one around 1.5 years. I have 1 pin basted and 2 spray basted. It’s the first time I spray basted. Then 3 more have batting and backings cut. So I’m feeling hopeful! 🤞The 7th one is one of my oldest and, instead of making the BOM into a quilt, I’m making a pillow cover and wallhangings. I did finish 2 UFOs last year. |

Hi, retiredteacher09 from another retired teacher! This is the second half of my first school year retired, and I think from August to December 2024 it was just sinking in!
I know I don’t have to show my list, but I thought I’d share it. I’m really going to try to prioritize these projects this year. I have many more that are either kits I haven’t even touched or ideas that I haven’t even really started putting together; those might get added as we go. I’m working on number 7, the Merry Mayhem Mystery, pretty steadily right now, but I like Happylab’s game idea to keep me motivated, and I’ll work on my number 3, a Yellow Brick Road with pastel flowers, as well. Good luck, everyone! |
That's a cool checklist, Quossum!

Welcome retiredteacher09, Quossum, and Gemm. I’m looking forward to completing several of my UFO’s this year. In between quilting small projects for my friend. I have 7 more tops to quilt for her. My plan is to do 1 a day for the next 7 days. Which is doable. Then I can get to my projects. I like your list Quossum. I like the way you colored coded your list too.

my UFOs are all at least a few years old. You know how it is ... shiny objects and all that there.
Sunbonnet Sue - blocks done, no further progress French Braid - top done ... trying to make up my mind how to quilt it Double Wedding Ring - the last seam of the top is under my needle right now. 2 sets of blocks; going to pair them with two sets my friend made and we'll have two quilts we'll probably donate one i started to quilt, but messed up big-time. have to take out all those stitches and try again thinking about it, i just realized ... this was my list last year, too. OMG!!! lol |
Oh, I am in again, too. My list will come later. I need to lay eyes on my UFOs and am sure I have plenty for a one a month from my UFO basket and a couple of flimsies in my closet. I like the idea of a one a month challenge. I can do that....or at least I can try to keep up. I have some other goals that are "per month" such as one quilt using 2.5" squares per month to reduce my excess. There are just so many ideas our there that need to be tried, then they end up as UFOs. Squirrel and rabbit trails are real. Tee-Hee-Hee!

To those who liked my list… Thank you!
You can find many online templates for UFO’s if you search. I took the idea of one that I liked, popped it into Excel, and tweaked the categories of completion to go with my style. Sure, I could fill out the boxes in Excel, but I like the physicality of coloring them in with map colors! On the same chart, after doing a big airing out of the quilt cabinet, I also made a “quiltvetory” page, listing all the quilts that I have at my house, their disposition (including whether they’re quilts that firmly belong to us or ones that can be gifted if needed), and when they were last on the bed. Slowly getting organized here! |
Count me in this year. I am visiting a friend and will have to send my list once I get home later this week.

Oh, dear! I have so many UFOs, but rather than feel overwhelmed, I'm choosing eight to prioritize. (1) I have a Bargello top I made years ago, which I would like to add borders to and get quilted. (2-6)) 4 vintage quilt tops to either hand or machine quilt. (7) A Christmas quilt top I made on my Jones hand crank about 2 years ago. I'm starting the quilting today on a top I started months ago for my husband's aunt. I couldn't decide on the borders, and then I just lacked the energy to do anything for months.
I don't want to take the time to resize photos to get them to upload, but maybe I will once I get them finished. |
