What do you stay away from?

Everyone has something they avoid when piecing/quilting. Is it a pattern type? Fabric Designer? What's your no-no?

I've never thought in terms of avoidance, but of preference. When I started out quilting, anything and everything appealed to me. I veered first into modern designer fabric, but gradually I recognized a preference for traditional quilts and reproduction fabrics. While I admire Tula Pink's creativity, I would not buy her fabric because I wouldn't have a clue what to do with it.

My absolute no-no is using unwashed fabric (if it is a washable fabric) in a project. I will wash a two-inch scrap.

does it make more work for myself? Yes. But it is worth the effort to me.

One thing I am still working on - only offer advice/suggestions when asked.

exception: when something seems very out of place - to ask if this is intentional.

Entering quilt shows. Not gonna do it. I make my quilts the way I like to make them, and I'm not bothered by imperfections. I don't want to submit my work for someone else's judgment.

I stay away from curves. And Diamonds or Y seams. I made a Krista Moser pattern and it was very difficult for me so now I avoid her patterns.

I have to have the right size ruler for what I need. Not one one size bigger. I am making a block that is 7 1/2" unfinished, I want a 7"1/2 square ruler. I don't like to make do, I'm so over that from the lean years of having to. I'll wait until the right tool is found before I will start cutting or sewing that particular unit. I do have an extensive ruler collection and it's wonderful.

Is it okay to say negative people? I try most things with quilting. Some I like and some I don't. But never say never is a saying I like.

Hard to say
When I say "never" something comes along to change it.

Since I am colorblind, I use no more than 4 different fabrics in a quilt. My brain can't handle too much color analysis with faulty (though God given) perception. My quilts are usually very bright, as well, because I can see bright, basic colors fairly well. SoI'm definitely not a pastel person!

I avoid buying specialty rulers these days. After one use, I can't figure out how to use them again, so they sit until I give them away.
I, too, avoid Y seams. Even though I can sew them, they are pretty stressful for me to do well. And who needs to add stress to their life?
