We need new flooring, however the DEBATE is on as to the design concept. Our house is a 3,000 sf rambler situated in mature woodlands of the Pacific NW.

Hubby thinks I'm crazy because I would like Amtico rustic cherry VINYL planks (see photo) throughout the entire house. My opinion that a consistent flooring makes the space seem larger and would be clean, simple and so easy to care for.

DH claims "no one" has just one type of flooring throughout. He wants rooms to have different floor coverings including: ceramic tile in the entry, sheet vinyl in the kitchen, laminate planks in one bedroom, beige carpet in one bedroom, off white carpet in master and living room and dining room, and four different styles/colors of vinyl sheet in the four bathrooms and laundry. His opinion is that the different coverings help to define the rooms.

Since we are at a standoff, HE suggested I ask for YOUR opinions. Is it better to have consistent flooring or a variety?

I have hard wood floors everywhere except the kitchen and bathrooms. The ONLY reason those floors are not wood is because I worried about water damage. If your vinyl planking can take the water, put it all over.

Consistent floors make the house look bigger. It is easier to clean if you can use the same products and tools on all floors.

Tile grout is a pain to clean anyway!

Under no circumstances should there be off white carpet in any room unless he intends to clean it and realizes it will need replaced more often than your planks.

I love the cherry planks but I would like something different in the kitchen and the bathrooms at least.

oh please, each room different!!!! you'll never sell your house easily in the future if you need to. jeesh.

I would vote for your husbands plan. I think the same flooring would be boring. Sorry, but I like variety :-D

Wait a minute...these are not hardwood. Amtico is top of the line commerical luxury vinyl tiles that look like wood. They are 3" x 36" inches. They can handle water, the dogs, and as much company as we can bring home. They don't fade either. They are pricey but stunning and the only thing that looks as good as wood to me.

We have vinyl plank in our kitchen and laundry room. It has been down a year now and there's not a mark on it anywhere! The new hardwood is another story. Disgusting how much that cost and how easy it is to damage.

I vote for your idea. No transition strips!!! I hate that. No matter how hard I try there is always a little bit of grit that gets there by the transition strips!! And I will NEVER ever have carpet in my house... a few throw rugs will certainly break up the sameness of the flooring and help to define spaces.

PS... Ceramic tile is also a pain in the butt!

I believe that the Amtico, Rustic Cherry is the floor we installed into our house last year. I have it in the Entry, hall, dwnstairs bath, laundry room, kitchen and family room. It is the best flooring around, we love it. We do still have carpeting in the Living and Dining rooms, it needs to be replaced, with more carpeting, and the stairs and upstairs are carpeted as well. In our house the one floor on most of the downstairs helps the house flow. Our house is very compartmentalized, you can definatelly tell when one space ends and another begins.
We were thinking of putting in real wood floors but with 3 big dogs, a kitchen and a laundry room in the mix, chances are that it would get ruined, and if we had it would have been ruined already. This stuff is the greatest!! We got the better quality, which I think is this same one. We don't have to worry about the dogs messing, or water dripping or anything like that. It looks like a real wood floor and most people think it is until we tell them otherwise (including the housekeeper!!)(it cost us more to put this in than a real wood floor)
You will love this flooring. I suggest doing it all in the same floor and just use some throw rugs around the place
