My son lives in WV and has a German Shorthaired Pointer that's around a year old. Last night he calls and I can tell by his voice that he's upset. He tells me that he has Greyson in the car and is on the way to the vet. They live out in the country and on a hike Greyson was attacked by a black bear. I couldn't believe what I was hearing & asked him to repeat what he just said. Long story short Greyson got lucky! Actually everyone (humans, too) got very lucky that they were able to scare the bear off. He has several large bites on his behind and backs of his legs. But because the vet said that bear bites can get infected really fast they decided to not do stitches and keep the wounds opened. They put him on some really high powered antibiotics. But, I sure that he will be sore for quite some time.

OH MY!!! Hope Greyson will be ok! I have heard that bears get really irritated when dogs are around.

OH, everyone is soooo lucky!! This could have been a tragedy instead of a survial story.

Wow! I am so sorry to hear that your son's dog was injured but very grateful they are okay. I can't imaging running into a bear on a hike! DH and I love to go hiking and never once think of a bear!

oh wow, sounds like Greyson was maybe the hero and took the bites...

That is scary. Sounds like maybe the dog was trying to do some protecting.

We have alot of black bear around here. A year or 2 ago during the middle of the day a bear wondered into a local campsite where there were several campers. He went inside of a tent and tried to carry off a child that was about 2 years old that was napping. The mother heard something, turned around to see what it was and started screaming. The bear turned loose of the baby. It was unharmed. So you guys that have bears you need to be more cautious. Never feed them! Yes I like to ride up on the mountain and take pictures of them but thats it!

Wow...can't imagine how scary it must have been to see a bear trying to carry your child away!

In Northern Mich they are prevelent at the landfills, but the locals KNOW not to feed at home.
Alas, many campers do not understand why the bear precautions are in place.
