I posted last week for help figuring out something and I'm so thankful for all of the replies. Now I have another question. I'm still working on this quilt pattern: http://www.freequiltpatterns.info/qu...e-patterns.htm
Until now, I've only cut and sewn together the blocks. Now it's time for the border. The pattern says this: 3. First Border Cut 6 - 2 1/2” strips. 4. Outside Border Cut 6 - 5” strips Is the dimension given for the length or the width of the strips, and how do I know the other? |
I would assume that they are (WOF) width of fabric. But I may be wrong.

If you read the directions for making the borders, they have you piecing the borders, so when they say "cut strip" I am interpreting that you cut the strips the width of the fabric.
I personally do not like to pice borders, but I don't know if you have enough fabric to cut the needed border lengths as indicated in the instructions #5 & #6 for adding the borders. 5. First Border - Press to border Stitch border pieces together end to end. Cut into segments: 2 - 55 1/2”, 2 - 52”. Stitch 55 1/2” pieces to right and left sides. Stitch 52” pieces to top and bottom. 6. Outside Border - Press to border Stitch border strips together end to end. Cut into segments: 2 - 61”, 2 - 59 1/2”. Stitch 59 1/2” pieces to right and left sides. Stitch 61” pieces to top and bottom. |
I agree it sounds like the borders are cut on the width of the fabric.

Lay your fabric out with the sevedges away from you, the fold closest, measure 2 1/2 in. from edge and cut---Do that 6 times! Then do the same for the 5 in. Hope this helps! |
Those are the width demisions. If you look further down the pattern it tells you what length to cut them...read steps 5 & 6. Hope this helps, I like that pattern :).

If you only purchased the border fabric as per their directions, you will have to use their directions to piece the borders. If you have extra fabric, cut the border the length of the fabric to the needed border lengths.
Fabric requirements posted: First Border: 2/3 yard Outside Border: 1 1/4 yards |
The dimension given is for the width of the strips. The inner border is more narrow (2.5" ); the outer border is wider.
The length of the strips is the width of the fabric selvedge-to-selvedge (typically about 42" ). Oops! Guess I should scroll down and read *all* the replies before posting! |
Isn't it amazing how designers directions are so different. Some are so easy to comprehend, others you just have to re-read and re-read to grasp what they're trying to explain.. or just me? ha! I must be dumb or old age has caught up with me. I love it when they give the width and length. Sure, you'll still have to fuss with borders to get them correct, but it sure seems easier to have a close idea. That's why when I find a designer who I really can understand their directions easily, I stay with them!
