I have made rag quilts but have never made a regular quilt. I was wondering if you had taken classes or are you self taught. What is the easiest quilt design to learn for a beginner.

Claudia had a little shop called the "snowed in Quilt Shoppe" (it no longer exists) she took a bunch of us under her wing and patiently taught us to love fabric and patterns and now most of us are still addicted. Find a great teacher.

Trial and error all on my own until I found this board. :)

I learned from watching Quilting shows on TV like fon and Porter, also checked out books from the library. I bought those blocks of the month from JoAnn's and sewed them before I got into cutting my own fabric. I have never taken a class so I can't tell you which is better.
I now belong to a club and I think that would help someone in the beginning. I didn't have any friends at that time who did any sewing. good luck and you will find lots of help around here I know.

I had made some very simple quilts with lots of mistakes, but I have been sewing since I was 14, and that helped alot. I took a quilting class over 20 years ago, and it was how to make a quilt totally by hand- also tracing the pieces and cutting them out- no rotary cutters! Then I started buying every book I could find on quilting. I learned quite a bit from books- but I have also learned in the short time I have been hanging around here! Lol!

I got a book and some fat quarters. The rest is history.

Self taught. Bought a kit, a cutting mat, ruler, rotary cutter. Made the quilt in the kit, which I didn't care for when the top was done. Never did finish it. Then I found jelly rolls, and I was hooked. I love the variety of the fabrics in them. And there are so many patterns you can do with them. I just love the scrappy look.

It came on me so gradually I hardly knew what happened to me until one day I looked around my room it was totally full of fabric and quilting supplies.
