This is the way I do it and have for years. There is another product called Erase but I haven't seen it sold for a while. The Goo Gone seems to have taken over the market. This does not damage your plastic and does not smell too bad either. You can use WD-40 in a pinch but the odor is awful and it is not as safe as the Goo Gone.
By the way, they make a nice stencil adhesive that comes in a bottle with a dabber that works great instead of the more powerful spray adhesive. It is sold near the stencils in the store. I prefer that.
