Wow. My cousin said in high school he wanted to be a nurse( this was mid 80's) and the teacher told him not to be silly. Girls were nurses and men were doctors.
And people talk about breaking down the gender roles but I see a lot of gender roles that are enforced around here where I am. Just look at the elementary schools. If you are a man in the elementary school, more than likely you are the janitor or you are the principal, you are not the teacher or even a teacher aide. Most of the elementary schools are women in most of the positions. I have heard people say that women are more nurturing than men so they should be in elementary schools and men should be in middle and high school as teachers.
So I guess we still have a ways to go.
