The repairman showed my niece the singer needle. I would be very hesitant to loan my machine unless the person had the same model I was loaning and took care of her machines...cleaning, oiling, changing needles, etc.
I thought all brands of the same SYSTEM of needles would be interchangeable. Example: a singer 15x1 needle would also be acceptable for a machine that usually used a schmetz 15x1 needle.
