Try to think fun but on the edge of macho.
Camo is usually a safe bet, for boys that age. Cartoon fabrics - but nothing babyish - usually go over well. 'Bug Jars' would probably be safe. If he has a favorite sports team, that's always a good bet. As for pattern, make it easy on yourself. Most 11 year-old boys won't care about the pattern.
