I figure if I could have bought it new in my lifetime (62) it's not even vintage! How's that for trying to stay young!?! Collectors that I've read say sewing machines are only antique if they were made before 1900; later than that and they are vintage. Cars made before WWII are antique; later than that are collectible, according to some. All wine is Vinted, so any age may be vintage. Too confusing for me to get hung up on!

I know the feeling, I too am searching for true antiques on craigslist and get so peeved when it's not an antique. There is quite a big difference in the periods...in the looks of furniture and such.

Whether it is antique or vintage depends on who you are talking to and what rules they apply to the items. To enter an item in the Kentucky State Fair as an antique they say to be considered antique, an article must be at least 50 years old. So the description of antique or vintage can be different depending on who or what group is referring to antiques.

This is a quote:

In purist terms, and according to the U.S. Customs Service, an antique is an item with at least 100 years of age under its belt. That means that genuine Victorian pieces are now true antiques.
However, the term antique is used rather loosely among the masses, and often ends up reflecting the age of the person using it. To a teenager, for example, a toy from the ‘60s seems “antique," while a senior adult might see it as something they used or saw in the home of their parents or grandparents as a child.

everyone has their own ideas about what it means- but if you go by definition---
i'm an antique....from the past-

There. I'm getting off my soapbox. Said my piece, and as I mentioned before, it really doesn't matter...I just had to get it off my chest! (Can you tell I've been surfing Craig's list and ebay?) Thanks! ;)

I totally agree, people think if they say antique it will fetch more money; much of the stuff offered is only about garage sale quality !

100 years old or more for most stuff is ANTIQUE. Fabric art (quilts, etc.) of 50 years old is ANTIQUE. Autos, I believe, are considered ANTIQUE at 30-35 years old or more. All the rest are VINTAGE.
