We'll soon need another conversion chart, for sewing and cooking!! I know I have recipes that call for a pound can of fruit and just can't get it that way! And ice cream is no longer in a gallon container. what!?!? I can't say I ate the whole half gallon by myself anymore!?!??! LOL!!!

When I make pillow cases I don't cut off the selvedges, less work that way and it works out just fine.

I had the same experience - makes me mad. Now I double check the width of bolts of fabric. Unfortunately many patterns give yardage based on 44" width.

I bought some from Joann and Christmas, they sold it to me for half off the half price, the fabric is only 24" wide! I figure I can use it for a table runner or just cut it in squares. They guy said it was a mistake on the part of the manufacturer, but I feel bad for the lady who purchased it in front of me, she had no clue and had already been long gone.

I have had this happen with fabric from Joanne's -- after washing. The shrinkage was about 2 - 3 inches in the width.

This just happened to me yesterday! I get my fabric online, needed 44" for my border and fabric was only 42"...now I'll have to figure out how to piece the 2" and have it look ok...ughhhh

I too rember the 36" fabric, and my mother had even narrower. By I really hadn't noticed the new down sizing. Thanks for the tip!

I'm from the era of 36" fabric too. Mother made all my clothes; a lot of it Dan River fabric of 4 yards to a package. It would make very, very, very full skirts which needed lots of can-can slips :>)
