I recommend you join the yahoo group called elnaheirloomsewingmachines There are some incredibly experienced and helpful people there who will help you get this girl stitching again.
I am certain that you will not need to replace anything. Just a RGC. (Real Good Cleaning) ;-)
If you do need a new bobbin case, I have another Elna which I am cannibalizing for parts, so feel free to be in touch when you get there, rather than buying a new one, in case my bobbin case fixes your woes. But honestly, I don't think you are going to need to replace anything.
Again, congrats. I think you got yourself a workhorse of a machine there!

Thanks Cecelia. I did join the Elna Yahoo group. I am still cleaning, such a dirty girl. I don't think she had EVER been serviced. I do think it is the plastic bobbin case base that is the culprit. By comparing it to my Elna type 68 bobbin case it the base appears to have rough edges that prevents the thread from smoothly moving through the bobbin case. Open up the bottom of the machine. It's possible you have some thread caught in there too. Also, make sure there is absolutely no little bits of it left in the bobbin assembly. It may have to come out to get all the thread. It's held in by two, spring loaded screws. I've worked on several of these machines and they're wonderful. You do need the correct bobbins or you'll have nesting. This machine does not take plastic bobbins. You can find the correct bobbins by doing a google search.

I have the correct bobbins from my Type 68, so that is not the problem. In order to get to the bottom of the machine I will have to figure how to un-mount it from the base it sits in. A special tool? I will take some pictures and post them.

There's no special tool needed. If the needle broke and hit the bobbin assembly, there may be some small burrs that can be lightly sanded out.

Pics of the base. The machine is mounted in a tray that attaches to the cabinet. There are some kind of C clip fasteners that secure the machine to the tray. Suggestions???
