If the other posts haven't comvinced you not to go with carpet think of this: you can always put an area rug on top of other flooring but not vice versa.

Casters are available for carpet or hard surface. Make sure that you have the correct caster for your flooring.

for cleaning ease I would vote against carpet.

NO CARPET! I'd prefer cork over regular hardwood. You'll still have a hard smooth surface, but the cork would give you a smidgen of cushioning and be a bit warmer.

i have allergies 12 months a year, and they can be extreme. We actually built our house because it was so hard to find one that pets hadn't lived in. I am fine with a very low-pile carpet, low-density carpet. So, one can't generalize about cleanliness and allergies, I think. It depends on the kind you've got (and how much pet dander and hair there is to get caught in it).

No carpet, you cannot roll on a chair and to much thread on carpet.

I have the strip vinyl floor in my sewing room. My daughter laid it down in a log cabin pattern and i LOVE it. It is easy to keep clean, quieter and was cheaper then hardwood. Definitely NO carpet.

I'd vote for the vinyl plank flooring as well with an area rug. We put the plank in our dining room a couple of years ago and are getting ready to put it in our bedroom as well. Soft; quiet; easy to clean. But the area rug helps tremendously. I do have hardwood (original to this 200+ yr old house) in my sewing room with an area rug and I love that combo as well. But if I didn't have the hardwood - it would be the vinyl plank.
