Singer Treadle Identification: Blurry Picture Help

I was cruising the internet looking at old sewing machines available in my area. I came across this:

Is this a vibrating shuttle #1? Or am I crazy?

It looks like a Singer 48 to me and that is a very nice machine

I assume it's the worth $100 and an hour drive?

It would be to me!

There is a name for that style of cover. I want to say coffin but that might not be correct.

I can see why you might think it is a number 1, as the fiddle base (which rules out a singer 48, see http://www.singersewinginfo.co.uk/48/), the large hand wheel, and apparent lack of decals look like the #1 in the ISMACS article http://ismacs.net/singer_sewing_mach...g_shuttle.html

But, the cross shape of the shuttle covers on the bed indicate that it is a transverse shuttle, not a vibrating shuttle machine like the number 1. I am intrigued, so I will keep looking . If it is $100, that seems like a really good price for an uncommon machine.

RotaryQueen,

That is the exact picture I was looking at on ISMACS. I surfed through countless google images of coffin tables looking for the emblem on the lid.

I have decided not to get the machine. I have slept on it and came to that decision. If anyone else is interested in the machine and is in or around Ohio, I can send you a link to the sale. Since there are real names and such involved, I don't want to link it publicly.

The picture isn't great, but it looks like a model 12. It was a transverse shuttle, fiddle base machine, with a large handwheel like that. The model 13 and New Family are similar, but they have another little slide in front of the access plates around the feed. The style of the treadle irons fits with that age of machine as well. I've never seen one in person; I admire your willpower in passing on it!

Some days I have it, and other days, I don't!

I just want to say, thanks for everyone chipping in information. So many times, searching the internet just does not compare to asking knowledgeable people.

I, too, have seen pictures just like that of Singer model 12. And, yes those box tops are called coffin tops.
