Is quilting a hobby or an art?

I just love your poem, Silver Needle. It says what I feel. Thanks so much for sharing this with us.
Not my usual style of poetry but I hope you enjoy...
Quilting is:
A passion screaming to be expressed.
A picture in my minds eye waiting to be seen.
History woven in mystery passing down from one generation to another and on into the future.
My avocation, my joy, my gift to share with others.
Love you can wrap some one in to give comfort and courage.
A piece of myself I give away freely.
Time spent alone in contemplation and time spent with others in collaboration.
Learning, teaching, listening, designing, refining, beginning, ending, finishing and completion.
An explosion of color or shades as muted as a whisper.
Quilting is me, quilting is we...who are quilters.

Don't listen to the opinions of Philistines - it wouldn't be an accredited course at fine art school if it didn't have the legs. We all know the answer that it is an art - no matter what form it takes and we should all encourage each other to produce the best quality of which we are all individually capable. Learn and enjoy is what I say.

For me it's a very relaxing hobby--no stress, no time frame, no expectations of everything being perfect. The quilts I make are made with love and given to those I love and know will appreciate and use them.

I think it depends on the designer of the quilt. I am a crafter. I need to follow a pattern. My cousin is an artist. She creates her own patterns, sometimes creates her own fabric, and has a different kind of "eye" she sees with than I am able to do. But no matter what you call it, go for the gusto and your degree. The knowledge base can only make you happier. That's the true measure. m

It may be a hobby or a business, but if you take the art out of it, it's not fun! I love seeing the quilts come together and lying in bed at night and planning my next quilt in my head. I love thinking about various color venues and quilting designs. I'm interested in learning "shadow trapunto" and "thread painting". Am I an artist? In my head I am....even if others think I am lacking or just spending a lot on a hobby. Going back to school to improve your artistry? By all means, if that's what you want to do. LOL, I admire you for even thinking about going back to school after retirement! Just getting back into the study mode will probably be challenging, but you go for it, girl!!

I consider it both. I guess it depends on whether or not you use your imagination. If you follow a pattern "verbatim", then it's someone elses "art" and you are just copying their works. If you change it to your likes/needs/designs/fabrics/etc...that makes it yours and makes it art. It is really an "OBSESSION" rather than a hobby tho! I was told that before I ever got into quilting...they were right!
