Now I always check the pattern, book, mag, etc, for the copyright statements. If they say I can't sell the item after buying their pattern, then I don't buy the pattern. Many of them now say you can't sell their pattern commercially but you can sell the item you made from it. I now look for those patterns and applaude the pattern maker for stating that I can sell it. They usually ask you to give them credit, which I always do.

are triangles, squares and circles copy writted? i'd say no. most have been used for hundreds of years. if i remember the law correctly , if an item has been in the public domaine for a certain number of years it cannot be copy writed. hence i would say patterns using any of those shapes were issued in error.

Some fabric is also now copyrighted and can only be used for personal use, not for items to sell.

My understanding is that unless you get permission you can't see a project that someone else designed (unless you change the pattern in a way that makes it your own).

If someone buys a pattern and hires you for your labor, you are selling your skill as a quilter.
