I used InsulBright in mine, because I use them for hot tea mugs and figured the InsulBright would protect surfaces from heat and or spills.

whatever you have for scrap should work unless she is going to put a pot right off the stove on it...then insulbright

I use a lot of insul-brite, but sometimes I use scraps of fleece or double knit. Just don't make them too fluffy.

and it just use it as batting since mug rugs don't need to be fluffy!

That is adorable; the DH and I are leaving to take a Christmas shopping trip down in AL and GA, and when I see a quilt shop, I'll be looking for some fabric like that. I love it.....

I have made some mug rugs and bought Warm and Natural batting for crafts. It is easier to handle, and is also good for wall hangings and just the right thickness. The alternative would be remnants from other projects.

Believe it or not I found this at Joann's. I went to get fusible fleece and walking by the isle where licensed quilting fabric it caught my eyes and I gasped so lowed that a lady looking at the fabric was cracking up and goes "it must be really interesting what you found" ....lol
