I did the same two weeks ago! I found some I forgot or don't remember even geting but what a pleasant suprise since I just loved it! But also found out I didn't have as much as I thought I had. Yet I still really need to used my stash before I get on a buying crazy again...lol.

Yes I know now what I have in my stash, it's in order for the time being...we'll see how long that last!

My stash is in drawers or stacked up in a closed cabinet so I can't easily see it all the time. One of my favorite things to do is to take everything out and lay the stacks on my bed and reorganize. Sometimes by color, sometimes by future project, sometimes by theme, sometimes by size. Makes me feel like a miser running his fingers through a stash of coins and smiling gleefully.

Some people do crossword puzzles or sudoku to keep their mind sharp.
I have memorized all the pieces in my stash to exercise my brain.
    It's a full time job.

No idea. I get lovely surprises when I go to move boxes as no matter how neatly stacked hey slide bout and hide. I believe that a night when all is quiet the fabrics deliberately come out to play and mix themselves up.

I sort by project (which in a way is like color family, right? or at least style family), put them in plastic bags but with top open or just lay in drawer separated by tissue paper. It is two-plus years now and I am running out of room...

But I don't do stash-building by buying yards or FQ stuff to use someday. I did that once and it annoys me no end to see it lying around. LOL

It was painful but in 2008 I spent 2 weeks sorting and refolding rather than sewing.
But what a difference. Even in a two foot stack of fabric I can see every fabric in the stack.
The key has been to keep it up, not get piles of messy stacks and just leave them.

5 years and it's still neat. What a concept

Some of our members are folding around boards, I just folded around a 24X6 ruler, and stacked neatly.

My stash is in a 6' cabinet. I keep it very organized. Flannel, holiday and pre-cut batting on the bottom. Next shelf up is larger pieces; 4 yrds or more on their sides. Next shelf looks like a book shelf (fabrics folded vertically). Top shelf is 2 1/2" strips (leftovers from past projects), fat quarters and pieces less than 1 yard.

I do find surprises that I forgot that I had. However, I have yet to buy a double. If it doesn't fit, I need to use up some of the stash before I buy more. I usually have extra batting from quilts which I cut up into 8" squares to be used in a rag quilt. If I want to make fast space, then I make a rag quilt.

My stash is stacked in a large double closet with clear drawer files on both ends. Also have lots more in the quilting room stacked. I still get an occasional surprise when I unearth a fabric I had forgotten but I see that as a bonus not a bad thing.
