SEAM RIPPER is a must. I love the Seam Fix one myself. Also a tape measure, marking pen & straight pins.

A 1/4" foot is important. Also, someone mentioned buying classes on Craftsy. If you go to craftsy.com and join (for free) and go to the online quilting classes (there's a bunch of them), look for their FREE 2012 Block of the Month by Amy Gibson. They also did one this year, but that one was awesome and so perfect for a beginner. You sign up and work at your own speed and watch a video of Amy demonstrating each month how to make two blocks. At the end you'll make 20 blocks!! She even takes you through sewing your blocks in rows, layering your quilt, quilting it and then binding it. And you can watch each episode a gazillion times. They are yours forever. She starts out easy and slowly teaches harder techniques. Nothing your daughter couldn't handle. I kept up with it and loved the classes and Amy. She turned me on to paper piecing, which I despised before I watched her do it. Now it's my favorite way to sew. To me, it's better than signing up for beginning sewing classes and it's free. And each month you download what materials you'll need. She tells you at the beginning what you need. It's like a fat quarter bundle and a few yards of Kona white (if you want yours to look like her's). Sorry I babbled on. I got so excited hoping your daughter would check this out! I wish this was around when I was first learning to quilt!! Good luck to your daughter. Hope you both can sew together some weekends!

There are several free Craftsy classes that she could sign up for. At least two of them are BOMs, and there are a couple tote bag classes. There's also one which explains how the different feet are used. I didn't see where anyone recommended marking pens/pencils; a 120" tape measure for measuring quilt tops for borders (if you can't find one in a store, Karen Kay Buckley has one in her website store). In fact, I highly recommend her serrated scissors. I would also recommend a 6-1/2" and a 12-1/2" square.
