If you want it for sewing, I'd go with the 301. I really don't care for shuttle bobbins for general use. The 128 is so heavy that mine never moves.

Sometimes I think about how people priced the parts that they sell on eBay. Just in this case- sewing machine is $35 and it comes with $10 buttonholer . So that's 10$ less for the asking price. Machine price will come up to $25. Now let's look at the parts- it has the VS shuttle which I always see priced on eBay for $20-24. So technically I am looking at a $1-$5 antique sewing machine. Parts prices on eBay is so high. Shouldn't the shuttle be only $5 at max??? Go figure.

i can't cannibalize an otherwise good SM to part it out. but then again, i've never been great about making profitable investments. I get huge satisfaction out of oiling, polishing and sewing test strips.

I like to hand crank the little 128s - they are really nice when you go camping. Peace and quiet until some kid wants to learn to sew. he he he... pied piper maybe? I doubt if you could HC a 301.

I have a 128 hand crank also, love it. I wish i could find a crank for National Windsor B that got its motor busted in shipping.

    Bought any automobile parts lately?

Try buying a complete car one part at a time and see what the cost would be.

Let us know how you like the 301 once you get it. It certainly would be my choice!
