I think your puppies are cute. I would go with the attic windows in black and perhaps soft yellow.
Trisha - Love those photos - maybe they're 'seeing eye dogs'. ROL (why can't I post smileys?)
Cheers

H'mm Michelleoc, to me your puppies look like a wall hanging. I would "hang" it in the room where it will be shown. The colors in the room will help determine how much to brighten it with borders & sashing. Secondly: how BIG do you want the completed quilt to be? Start with your Outer border, whether you use a very busy print, or a solid, or a neutral. Then you could do a very narrow (half inch wide) framing of each puppy, then determine your sashing, by laying your squares against some solid fabric, and looking at each for a week or so... auditioning the various colors. You may find that the brights are very off-putting, and go with a soft color. And I think one puppy needs a little smile.

i would use a dark brown sashing with a border the same size as the sashing. then, if you have more of the small checks, i'd use that for an outside border. i'd bind it in the dark brown

Your blocks are adorable and everyone's suggestions are great. I'm not an attic windows fan but do whatever you love. And I love the idea of getting some of that 'paws' fabric for borders. Have fun..... it's going to be a great quilt.

Very cute!! I would sash in black which I think would make the dogs and their features pop. Then do an inside border in black to complete the frame around it. Not needed but if you found a cute puppy paw or dog bone print in browns and black for an outer border would finish it off nicely
