My sister was on dialysis for several years and she was also very very cold. She had a quilt that covered her from below her chin to over her feet. She used to sit in a recliner type chair (this was in the 90"s so that may have changed). knowing the size of chair and the size of your Dad, (tall short big small) will help in making a quilt that will fit his specific purpose. Maybe taller than wider so it doesn't end up dragging on the floor on either side of his chair. I also suggest either fleece or flannel for the backing, they are more snuggley.
Just a thought and wishing you and your father all the best.

I would layer the top with batting and back it with Minkee. It would be extra cuddly and warm. I haven’t done this myself, but my longarmer does it and has no problems.

The carpenter's star is quick and there is a free pattern on line. You could add borders to get the size you need and i agree with the warm backing options and chin to over feet length. ( our hospital still has patients in recliners)

I was on dialysis before my transplant. A nice lightweight quilt with a soft backing really helped with the bone-chill you feel while getting a treatment.

Make sure the quilt is very washable.

When my husband first started dialysis, I was told I might want to furnish him with a blanket of some sort. I had several crocheted afghans on hand, but none of them seemed quite right. I also had a fleece throw that I had made, two layers of fleece, and tied fringe around the whole exterior. (remember back in the day!) He loved it. I did make a quilted throw, but he preferred the fleece. Warm, and very washable. He used it for five and a half years while on treatment. If you are in a hurry, you might want to consider that, unless your father would prefer a quilt that you made especially for him. Best wished to you dad.

I saw this quilt online and loved it. It is so simple. I understand it's a Bonnie Hunter's Carolina Chain, but this particular one struck me as easy and good looking (Bonnie's are usually too scrappy for my tastes). You could make it any size you wanted. I would think 5" precuts would work.

I made myself a lap quilt with flannel backing and wool batting. It is very cozy and warm. I love it.
