Thank you all so far for your pattern recommendations. I have fussed with the nine patch and agree it's not the easiest to line up as a beginner. The rail fence may be better? I also do not know what BQ is? I will see if anybody else has any other recommendations and do appreciate all of your help.

I also felt like you did with the nine patch and felt like giving up but I am still going! Currently hand quilting Grandmother's flower garden and love it (with 1930's fabric). The next project is machine quilting with a pattern. Any other pattern recommendations, help is appreciated!

It's probably not good to use initials familiar to seasoned (how's that for avoiding older) quilters when offering advice to newbees

Wow...not too many agree that this pattern is for a beginner! Now I'm really impressed with my first, a disappearing 9 patch.

    Thanks guys.

I entered the world of quilting using a big block free pattern with 4 10 1/2" blocks, a sashing in between each of the four rows. Side borders and a smaller 5 1/2" block corners. It is very simple and only where the corner blocks need to match up is required. The finished quilt is 50" X 65". The pattern came from a free website and is from Claudia's Quilt Shop listed as for Absolute Beginners. I love to use this pattern over and over and it sure makes quilting go fast. I have even altered the pattern to be smaller for a baby's quilt. No stress using this pattern.

I'm voting for Rail Fence. I'm assuming that your four fabrics all work well together. No fussy seam matching. Good luck with whichever you choose.
