I purchased a pattern, fabric, cut my fabric with scissors. Then I sewed and ripped, sewed and ripped til I got it right. Then I hand quilted the bear paw wall hanging and binded it according to a book and the rest is history. Btw that was the only thing I ever hand quilted. Now I have the whole works of stash, notions, 5 sewing machines, 1 embroidery machine and a Nolting long-arm. I am blessed.

My best friend started making quillows and quilts and she taught me. Then we both took a few quilting classes. We meet for lunch and an afternoon of "feeling fabrics" occasionally and we have a grand time!

One of the easiest quilt designs for a beginner is Trip Around The World. That is what my first quilt was many many years ago.
I took one course to begin with and after that was basically self taught with books, magazines, tv. and computer help.

A friend took me to a sewing group she was in, where about 20 women were quilting all on their own machines, I had so much fun, I had to join! Husband had bought me a Brother sewing machine from Walmart and it had sat in the closet for a year before I pulled it out of the box...I think he regretted that! then he had to start pulling me out of the fabric shops! I got bit by the bug and have had the fever ever since! Hope it never goes away!

I saw my fraternal grandmother make quilts for as long as I can remember.. and I started hand stitching from an early age. When I got older.. I just decided I'd make a quilt.. I don't think I ever gave a thought to "needing to know how" to make a quilt. and I've been doing it ever since...<grin>
A nice simple pattern for a beginner is a rail fence.. just stay away from curved seams and points for a little while.

I taught myself so I thought! Then I took a beginners quilt class & was worth every penny! I couldn't get enough classes then so I took one every chance I got...

I learned how to sew in 4-H, then Grandma and I sewed my first quilt. I calculated the math on the material (just enlarged 1 block to the size I wanted it to be) - then bought extra "Just in Case". Learned how to tie a quilt and was off and running.

Later I got back into it by taking a class at my LQS, and finally found this board and joined my local quilt club. My husband and kids have happily taken my beginning efforts, and I'm gradually getting to where I don't mind others looking at the work I do.

My suggestion - ask someone you think might quilt and you will be surprised at what will happen.

I've only been quilting since 2002 (retired). I bought a few "learn-how" books and watched different quilting programs on tv as well as on-line learn how sites. I am basically a self teacher in most everything I do. Give me a manual or instruction book and I can figure it out. I love quilting board too, and have learned a lot of tips from here. All I do is sew all the time. I do alterations, sew for granddaughter, and others. Mostly I quilt. I guess I have mad over 25-30 quilts, most of them hand quilted until I learned to bar tack them on the sewing machine as well as machine quilt. Most of my patterns came from on-line sites and/or books. Thanks to all of you who sent out ideas, tuts and pictures of your masterpieces. So glad I came upon this site by accident.
