The temptation is too great! My husband found out that my favorite quilt fabric store is going out of business. Gosh, what a loss is about 30-45 minutes away but is my favorite. We had planned to garage sale today, there is a big local/neighborhood sale just up the road from us. We even got cash for that which is my shopping budget.

Not that I need any more fabric, not that I even want much, but word is that everything is $10/bolt for whatever is on the bolt. I will get what I can/up to 10 wide backs (she has/had an extensive collection). I will also consider maybe some batiks, and the only thing I am sort of collecting right now are mostly black backgrounds (I'd like to do a Bonnie Hunter with Black as the neutral maybe this year if I think I can).

Blame it on the husband! And I claim store closing exemption!!!

I heard a plan for most of these fabrics, so consider them exempt.😁. And I agree the shop closing would make me purchase fabrics as well. I had a friend and coworker whose family sold her quality stash when she died. Fabrics were $5 per yard. I purchased $90 worth but it was mostly backing fabrics for the community quilts I make and donate. At that price, I couldn’t pass it up. With the ever increasing cost of fabric, think of it as a cost saving measure.

@Iceblossom store closure sounds like a great exemption to me. Now, as for me, I have not been very productive this year <sigh> I have added to my stash but no finishes yet. I do have my Indigo Way at the point where I just need to finish putting on those borders, and my Maxine lap top is almost a top. So I hope before the end of the year or by October when we go visit my daughter and grandson in Hawai'i that there will be finishes and fabric out the door.

Before I go further, I do wish to reaffirm my commitment to buying only needed fabric. When I can get these good deals it does allow me to share and be generous with what I have, but I really will need to use/distribute this in a timely manner. I ask myself can I see using (whatever it is) within 5 years.

We got out there just after opening today. Closeout had started last week but we hadn't heard about it. Store was maybe already 75% empty?? including all wide backs were gone. Still a couple hundred bolts left, I'd say they will be basically picked clean by the end of the day. The wide backs had been priced at $15/bolt, with all other bolts at $10. If it was too skinny/not much left they encouraged you to bundle two smalls for the price of one.

I got two mostly full bolts of white/yellow batiks. I have lots of yellows and oranges to use, these give contrast and/or backs. I'd guesstimate these were probably about 8-10 yards on each bolt.

Mostly I got Blacks and Grays. One of the (modern) grays was skinny, so I have a Civil War gray to make up for it.

The hubby was taken by a Orange/Red 70s sort of influence... I said I don't know what I would do with it, but sure, we can get those. Again, small amounts left, maybe 6 yards between the two bolts??

Two pictures of the same stack rearranged some... the gray stone/brick looks to be a full bolt with 18 yards listed on the label! It is darker in person, the one under it is a basically textured black.

So I think $100 for ~100 yards of fabric

Ice, I would say those are all good choices for backing, background or interesting patchwork. Good investment from my perspective.

Having fewer choices makes it easier at times. You did well on your choices as they can be put to use in several ways. 👍

And keep in mind, I didn't get anything from Joann closing! Marvelous restraint all in all.

"Old" me who wanted all the fabric would have happily bought 35-50 bolts if I had the money (which I usually didn't then but do now) -- to heck with the space or excess! I gave myself a splurge budget and a narrow shopping list. I could have happily joined another few bolts, but 10 was what I felt comfortable about. The textured black/gray I will bring to my group on Tuesday, one of the ladies there took a really cool extra large print that was hard to use, not only for the scale of the print but also for the colors. They weren't faded or washed out, but they weren't sharp red and black. She makes "Mondo Bags" and often donates them to groups/charities, I think the black will be perfect for the inside.

In terms of fabric in/out -- I still gave away more to the ladies last Tuesday than I brought home today. But not so much as really makes a difference. Net loss, but hard to tell.

Yesterday I gave myself permission to buy new fabric for a planned quilt. Didn't look in my stash. Have made 10+ scrap quilts and wanted to buy fabric. Additionally, I have a plan and asked friends for scrap contributions. I've been doing amazing at restraining. It was time for a purchase.

Thanks, QuiltMom2, we all need a little cheering now and again. Yea! on your restraint and not shopping for fabric. Three cheers to all of us for using what is at hand and then reveling in the joy of shopping when we choose to do so for that special quilt that thrills our heart. It does feel good now and again. Right Pet?
