Far as I know, there is no size limit. Minatures are pretty popular around. And if you haven't seen the minis at quilt show you might want to notice them next show time. As long as it has three (3) layers and is connected with thread, yarn, etc., it is a quilt.

I may be stupid, but I even call my 3" quilted name tags a quilt.

is anything crocheted an afghan? NO call it what it is. perhaps you could add "quilted" to the front, to say how it was made. "I made QUILTED coasters, last night." not I made a pile of small quilts last night.However... remember "doll &minature quilts" are a field to themselves--BUT people know they are SMALL , by their nature

Does it really matter what you call it? As long as you had fun making it and it makes you or someone else happy then it really doesn't matter what you call it.

Interesting question! I belong to a group in which we record our fabric purchases and usage (only for ourselves to help "control" the stash) and I also post my completed projects. From June - August, I pieced, quilted and bound 15 quilts each measuring 36" x 48" that were donated to veterans taking the Honor Flight from Toledo, OH to Washington, D.C.

I counted those 15 quilts in my totals only to have a couple of people e-mail me and say that I should not list them individually, but perhaps count 2 as 1 because they were so small. They said that by counting those 15, I was inflating my totals and it made everyone else's numbers look too low. WHAT?!?

Of course I'm still counting them because the numbers are for my use; but I sure was taken back a bit. These quilts were all pieced just like any other quilt and are actually bigger than many of the baby quilts I make (and those e-mail senders as well, according to their blogs).

But I digress. I call anything that is pieced and layered a quilt, but sometimes refer to art work as wall hangings rather than quilts. They are still quilts in my mind and I guess I do sometimes refere to them as quilted wall hangings.

In the book "Collectors Guide to Quilts" by Suzy McLennen Anderson, this is the definition she gives. "A quilt is defined as a bed covering, made of three layers of fabric (the top, the back, and the batting, or middle layer)."

Just thought I would throw this into the conversation. I consider a quilt anything a person (or doll, or animal) can cover with. There are a lot of 'quilted' items, but they are not all quilts, IMO. But there are no quilt police here so you can call quilted items whatever you want.
