I've seen a beautiful quilt made with nothing more than Kaffe Fasset squares - it's on Pinterest and has a luscious girly feel

"SAND CASTLES" by Rebecca Johnson at www.patternsonly.com. It can be made for a Princess or a Knight. Making it for my GD's first big girl bed. I am using "Basically Patrick" by Patrick Lose for my fabric. I am in love with this pattern! So much fun for a little one!

Made this one for my granddaughter a while back. It was made mainly from scraps.

Such an individual choice really. When I made a quilt for our DGD, I wanted to make something that would grow with her, so chose not to do a themed print. They painted her room a bright banana yellow and that was my only clue. So far it has served her well. Here is another simple one to pick from that would look good in any color combination or all scraps.

Have you thought of using a panel and the quilting around it ?

The watercolor quilt that quiltnan showed is what I'm working on. I got pastel rainbow fabric with a small white leaf in it. Pink, peach, pale yellow, green, baby blue, lavender. The rainbow will explode from the center. Here's the cool part: from a lady on etsy, I got 4" blocks with alphabet block shapes embroidered on plain white cotton. Those will go around the top edge of the bed, then the rainbow will continue down the sides a bit. My gd is only 5 months old, so I probably won't finish for a while....

Do a pastel variation of blocks and applique her favorite animal, flower or whatever she likes on it.

Here are a couple I was considering for my daughter. We're making a mermaid quilt for her bed now.

Warm Wishes is an easy quilt to make, but if they don't want a themed quilt, I would suggest picking out pastels and bright pastels, cut into 6" squares and arranged at random or diagonal rows, even a Trip Around the World would look good in pastels. Last year I made a "big girl" quilt for our DGD, but I made lots of appliques, hearts, butterflies, dragonflies, etc.. I finished the top just before having a torn rotator cuff repaired, so I was out of commission for a bit. Fortunately, and I do say fortunately, I made an oversized quilt, more full size than twin and then they told me they needed it to fit a full size bed. Pick an easy pattern, get lots of pastels, and make it large enough for a full size bed, so if they choose a twin, it can hang over the sides like a bedspread, that would work. I would consider making a KISS quilt - keep it simple sister.

I'd like it to be special (of course lol) but not overly difficult and definitly durable. I have a thousand ideas, but nothing that seems to be IT. I would love any ideas! Im overwhelmed and I think I may be trying to hard. Thank you for any suggestions or pictures!
Ask your GD what her favorite colors are. Ask her what her favorite flowers are. Ask her what her favorite books are. You can always use a pattern such as Warm Wishes for larger pieces of fabric. Maybe let kiddo pick out a layer cake pack.
